Retro Advertising: Halloween Gift Certificates at McDonald’s

Back in the ’80s and early ’90s McDonald’s used to offer booklets of gift certificates that were designed to be given away to trick-or-treaters on Halloween. It was a good deal for the giver, as they could purchase a book of ten certificates for one low price. And it was a great treat for the kids to get, as they ended up with a promise of a free sundae in the future.

I used to love getting things like these certificates in my trick-or-treat bag. You were always going to end up with more than enough candy for the short term, so these certificates gave you something to look forward to down the line. The other perk to having these was they allowed you to pressure your parents into taking you to McDonald’s to use it, which usually guaranteed you a Happy Meal as well. A two-for-one like that was worth so much more than more candy.
